What is a graphic adventure game?

An adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and puzzle solving. The genre's focus on story allows it to draw heavily from other narrative-based media, literature and film, encompassing a wide variety of literary genres. Many adventure games are designed for a single player, since this emphasis on story and character makes multi-player design difficult. Colossal Cave Adventure is identified as the first such adventure game, first released in 1976, while other notable adventure game series include Zork, King's Quest , The Secret of Monkey Island and Myst.

Initial adventure games developed in the 1970s and early 1980s were text-based, using text parsers to translate the player's input into commands. As personal computers became more powerful with the ability to show graphics, the graphic adventure game format became popular, initially by augmenting player's text commands with graphics, but soon moving towards point and click interfaces. Further computer advancements led to adventure games with more immersive graphics using real-time or pre-rendered three-dimensional scenes or full-motion video taken from the first- or third-person perspective.

For markets in the Western hemisphere, the genre's popularity peaked during the late 1980s to mid-1990s when many considered it to be among the most technically advanced genres, but had become a niche genre in the early 2000s due to the popularity of first-person shooters and became difficult to find publishers to support such ventures. Since then, a resurgence in the genre has occurred spurred on by success of independent video game development, particularly from crowdfunding efforts, the wide availability of digital distribution enabling episodic approaches, and the proliferation of new gaming platforms including portable consoles and mobile devices.

Within the Asian markets, adventure games continue to be popular in the form of visual novels, which make up nearly 70% of PC games released in Japan.The Asian markets have also found markets for adventure games for portable and mobile gaming devices.

New ‪#‎E3‬ 2016 Satellite Event Free and Open to the Public

The annual E3 gaming show in Los Angeles is not open to the public. This is not changing for 2016, but a new "E3 Live 2016" event will let anyone in the area check out games and meet industry personalities.
E3 Live is being billed as a "new, one-of-a-kind celebration of video games" and "E3's first-ever gathering for gamers."
Tickets are free, but are described as being in "limited" quantity. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The tickets are not yet available,
The event, which runs for a limited number of hours on June 14, 15, and 16, is held at LA Live. This is right next to the Los Angeles Convention Center, the site of E3 proper. It's open to all ages, but people under 17 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The E3 Live website explains there will be games, gadgets, and gear to check out, while there will also be live music and dance competitions. On top of that, attendees can partake in "one-of-a-kind" photo ops and check out virtual reality demos. There will also be merchandise available to buy at the event.
According to Kotaku, demos from companies like Ubisoft, Warner Bros., Alienware, and Oculus VR, among others, will be at the show. Head to the E3 Live 2016 website to learn more.
The Entertainment Software Association, which puts on E3 every year, is also behind E3 Live.
E3 2016 officially runs June 14-16, though the big briefings begin earlier. Both Electronic Arts and Ubisoft will conduct their press conferences on Sunday, June 12, while Microsoft and Sony will follow with their own shows on June 13.
The E3 2016 show floor this year will look different than in years past, as Electronic Arts, Activision, Disney, and Wargaming have decided they won't have booth space. These are some of the biggest companies in gaming, but their lack of presence this year doesn't mean E3 is losing its relevance, according to the ESA.
The question, "Is E3 still relevant?" gets asked every year, ESA VP Rich Taylor said earlier this year. "And then gets answered in June of that same year with a resounding 'yes,'" he said.
Some have suggested that letting consumers in might help boost the profile of the show. Taylor said he has heard this suggestion and explained that the ESA will be "taking a hard look" to see what can be done. While the show itself is not being opened to the public, at least not this year, it looks like the ESA is taking steps to include the wider gamer community with E3 Live.

The new level is the first in more than two decades from the game's co-creator John Romero
John Romero, one of the developers behind the seminal computer game Doom, has released his first new level for the title in 21 years.
He is offering the new material for free via the file-sharing site Dropbox.
Mr Romero told the BBC he had made it as a "warm up" for a new project.
Doom was released in 1993 and had 10 million players by 1995. It has retained a cult popularity, and still has a dedicated community of players who also create their own content.

Mr Romero worked on iconic games such as Quake, Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D
The source code - the computer program that powers the game, written in a human-readable computer language - has been available for some time.
As a result, Mr Romero estimates there are about 30 alternative versions of the entire game, and more than 100,000 add-on levels created by Doom fans.
"Every day people are still making new levels for it," he said.
His new level, Tech Gone Bad, is a boss level that offers an alternative climactic fight.
It ends in a massive complex with a huge computer room that links to different portals and "hell cracks" in the floor, he said.

The new level combines indoor and outdoor scenarios
The original final level was made by the developer Sandy Petersen and not Mr Romero.
The new version is mostly based outdoors.
Mr Romero said that distinguished it from the original game, which was largely based on indoor play, with the exception of Mount Erebus in level six (E3M6 in the Doom register).
"Doom mapping is pretty easy to do compared with 3D engines," Mr Romero said of his own creation.
"But I did worry... the community that's been playing it for 20 years would tear [the new level] apart."
However the reaction from players has been positive, he added.
"It's been out for four days and it's exploded. It's crazy that a game that's 23 years old has so many people still super-excited about it."

Players seem to like John Romero's new level.
He added he had no idea Doom would become such a perennial favourite back in the early 1990s.
"With Doom, it was mouse and keyboard-controlled on the PC when it was released, and you can still play it that way," he said.
"People remember how much fun they had a long time ago and I hope they will have that much fun again."
